WILDLIFE – House to Vote on Refuge Bill

WILDLIFE – House to vote on refuge bill
Cecelia Smith-Schoenwalder, E&E News reporter
Published: Monday, December 18, 2017

House lawmakers will vote this week to fast-track a bipartisan bill to reauthorize the National Wildlife Refuge System’s volunteer services, community partnerships and education programs.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) introduced H.R. 3979, which he said would help protect wildlife and ecosystems.
The bill would enable national refuges to expand volunteer programs and partnerships with community groups, according to Caroline Brouwer, government affairs director for the National Wildlife Refuge Association.
“In short this bill allows volunteers and friends groups to more fully participate in their local refuge,” Brouwer said during a House Natural Resources Committee hearing on the bill in November.
In fiscal 2016, 40,000 people volunteered 1.4 million hours to the 561 national wildlife refuges, according to a press release accompanying the bill’s introduction in October.
“National Wildlife Refuges host nearly 50 million visitors each year supporting local economies, however that would be impossible without the valuable contribution of volunteers and community groups,” Rep. Rob Wittman (R-Va.), a co-sponsor, said in a statement.
An identical bill, S. 1940, was introduced the same month by Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), ranking member of the Environment and Public Works Committee.
“These men and women give their time and talents to be good stewards of the world around us, and we must make sure they have the resources necessary to do this important work from which we all benefit,” Carper said in a statement.

Special Thanks to all that participated in the largest gun raffle for wetlands conservation celebrating Green Top Sporting Goods 70th Anniversary and Ducks Unlimited’s 80th Anniversary. Ducks Unlimited has conserved 47,571 acres in Virginia and more than 14 million acres throughout North America. Thank you for your support of Ducks Unlimited!

6th Annual Wetlands Conservation Dinner

The Virginia Ducks Unlimited Conservation Partners Program has been a very important event in support of our conservation efforts to preserve and protect wetlands in Virginia and North America. This event has raised more than a quarter of a million dollars over the last five years and we are confident this year’s event will continue the successful efforts in support of this important endeavor. This program has also helped Virginia DU to achieve national recognition in fund-raising, placing Virginia as a Top-10 fundraising state in the nation. We are excited about this success and it could not have happened without the support of significant donors such as yourself. Thank you!

With that in mind, we ask for your continued support of the VADU Conservation Partners Program by inviting you to attend this year’s event at the “Farm House” at The Country Club of Virginia, James River Clubhouse. The “Farm House” is a beautiful outside location on a hill between the front and back nine of the Tuckahoe Creek Golf Course with fantastic views overlooking the James River low grounds and Tuckahoe Creek. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held in the ballroom of the James River Clubhouse.

Also, please encourage your friends to help us in support of this cause and sign up to join us in an evening of conservation. If you have any questions or would like additional information, please contact Rich Johnson, Chip Heaps or me (see our contact information).

Again, thanks for your support of Ducks Unlimited and we look forward to seeing you on September 21st.

If you are unable to join us in September, you can still help support DU’s Rescue Our Wetlands campaign with a donation!
